What is the main theme??

What is the main theme or message of “The Old Man and the Sea”?
I think “suffering” is the main theme of this story. Hemingway want to saythat people must face a lot of difficulties through their lives like Santiago. From the beginning of the story, the old man was getting in difficulties because he had not caught any fish in 84 days. He really loves fishing, and the boy, Manolin respects him very much as a great fisherman. However, he is ridiculed by many other fishermen. Also, Santiago lost his wife, and he is lonely. He cannot bear to see the religious stuff that is his wife’s relics. There is a firm friendship between Santiago and Manolin. They both love each other. During his hard days on the sea, he wished that the boy were there so many times. Manolin wanted to go fishing with him, but the old man doesn’t want Manolin to come since the old man is unlucky, and he thought Manolin has their own mother and father. Additionally, at the end of the story, he lost his marlin because of the attack of sharks. Almost all the fiction stories end with a happy ending, but “The Old Man and the Sea” is different. Nature bring him many dangers.

Today, we have Dan’s last class. I cannot believe this semester will end tomorrow! Don’t you feel it is too early? However, I have a lot of things to do before summer vacation. I still have some assignments, and I have to take exams.

Thank you for teaching, Dan!!

Only 13 days...

Since ELA has started, we have learned many kinds of useful Internet tools, such as Grammarly, Feedly, Google document, and so on. In Wednesday’s class, Dan taught us a new great tool...Zotero! We can use Zotero when we cite sources. It is very useful, because we can cite resources by only open Zotero site and drag or copy our sources. I wish I could have known how to use it before I start writing my essay. Zotero is very helpful for me. However, I know it is not perfect. We need to know how to write a citation in an academic way, and check it very carefully. Zotero sometimes makes a mistake.

Yesterday’s ATS was the last class of ATS. We made a presentation about what we have learned from ATS. There are only few days until summer vacation. I cannot believe! I cannot wait my summer vacation, but I think I will miss my friends and section mates. Our summer vacation is very long.

Writing Introduction!!

Hello, everyone. Today, I want to talk about writing essay. We have learned how to write an essay in academic way, and finally we are now writing introduction and thesis statement. I learned some good way to improve introduction part from LBH.
・Ask question
・Relate an incident
・Use a vivid quotation
・Make a historical comparison or contrast
・In some business or technical writing, simply state your main idea...

I think introduction part is especially important in an essay. If this part is not interesting, some people may stop reading whole essay. We must catch readers' attention by using some strategies.

By the way, we had a lecture about “The Old Man and the Sea” in today’s LLA class. I was very nervous about next CWT, because there are only few days to prepare for it. It is coming on Friday!! Also, we don’t have so much time, because the deadline of the essay and some other reports will be coming, too. However, I think today’s lecture will help us to understand the content deeply. We learned a lot of background information of Hemingway and "The Old Man and the Sea". I know we cannot make an excuse to say "I didn't have enough time". College students must manage their time by their self, so I will study it hard, not I will "try" to study hard.

The Old Man and the Sea...

I'm sorry to write a blog in the morning.
I read the article about "The Old Man and The Sea". The theme is this, "There is Honor in Struggle, Defeat & Death". According to this article, the old man, Santiago is someone struggling against defeat. He is never defeated in this story. When I read this book at first time, I thought it is boring. I thought reading "Meiland" is much more useful for me, but now I think "The Old Man and the Sea" is a good book. I think it is a atory of deep significance.

It is sunny, today! I don't like rainy season, because I sometimes feel depressed. So, now I am very happy.

What is 3B?

Back ground, Biography, and Bias…
Good morning! Today, I’d like to talk about 3B. By the way, what is 3B?

3B is stand for Background, Biography, and Bias.

3B will help us to deepen our understanding, because they are very related to the story. Now, I want to focus on Bias in Old Man and The Sea.

Bias in Old Man and the Sea is this,

Gender bias: Hemingway’s divorce may explain why there is an absence of women in Old Man and The Sea(negative?)
Racial bias: use of “negro” vs. “nigger” reflects Hemingway’s attitude (positive)

I was wondering why there are no women in Old Man and the Sea before. Where are Santiago's mother and wife? Where are the boy's mother and girlfriend? This is because OMS has such a gender bias.

Therefore, learning 3B is the important way to understand a story.
We finished reading most of the story of Old Man and The Sea. The story drew to the conclusion!

The Old Man and the Sea...

Hello everyone.

We are now reading a small book called "The old man and the sea". This is a story about the old man, Santiago, and a young boy written by American author, Ernest Hemingway. I know that Ernest Hemingway is a great writer, and "the Old man and the Sea" is one of his most famous stories, but there was not so much interests for me. I think I like Meiland better...
However, I read an article on Ernest Hemingway today, and realized again that he is a great writer. According to the article,"The Old Man and he Sea" is most highly regarded novels, the short masterpiece. I was surprised, and I think I have to read it more carefully.

Thinking carefully...

Thinking carefully

We had Course wide test on fallacy and argumentation last Friday.

Through the test, I found that some of the fallacies are very similar, so it is difficult to distinguish differences between them. For instance, Hasty generalization and sweeping generalization are almost same. Here are the examples.

hasty generalization: I have seen many movies about California, and the weather is always sunny. I think that California always has really good weather.

Sweeping generalization: My roommate said her ARW class was hard. My ARW class is hard, too. All ARW class must be hard.

Can you distinguish these two fallacies?
I thought that there were some questions that have more than two possible answers. However, the answer is only one. I think I had to think about it more and more carefully.

Additionally, I realized that fallacies are not unfamiliar when I read Dan’s email. It was appeal to pity!! Some times we tend to use fallacies to persuade someone, but we should not use them when we write an academic essay.
